Design Portfolio: “Orchard Lane”

Orchard Lane is situated in the charming North Bellingham, Washington. This area holds historical significance, having witnessed a surge in growth during the early 1900s. Over a century, various architectural styles have emerged, reflecting the gradual development of the region. The original structure of Orchard Lane, built in 1926, embodies the Dutch Colonial style, which was popular during that era.

Client Background

The owners of Orchard Lane are passionate gardeners who have resided in the house for a considerable period. As a result, they have invested significant effort in adding flower beds and renovating their backyard throughout their stay. Because of the amount of work they have dedicated to their landscape, the clients sought assurance that any future renovation work would not compromise the beauty and integrity of their surroundings. Therefore, our team of designers conducted a thorough survey of the property and collaborated with the owners to develop a comprehensive plan to protect their landscape.

Proposed Extension

The proposed plan entailed the construction of a two-story dwelling designed to harmonize with the existing structure. Firstly, the top floor of the extension will feature a primary bedroom that offers a picturesque view of the owner’s beloved backyard. Secondly, the spacious bedroom includes a full-sized soaking tub in the en-suite bathroom and a walk-in closet, providing owners with a private and comfortable retreat.

Sustainable Heating Solution

To address the clients’ concerns regarding sustainable heating, the design has incorporated radiant concrete flooring wherever possible. Specifically, radiant heat is known for its energy efficiency, surpassing traditional baseboard or forced-air heating systems. Operating at a cool 84 degrees Fahrenheit, as opposed to the 167 degrees of a conventional furnace, radiant heating significantly reduces energy costs. Consequently, it works quietly, ensuring a comfortable and serene living environment.

Kitchen Design

The proposed kitchen design optimized the existing layout and cabinetry. As such, it ensures seamless integration with the client’s lifestyle. An island has been introduced by removing a dividing wall. This then connects the kitchen to the dining area, which creates a more open and spacious atmosphere. This updated design promotes a free-flowing layout and breathes new life into the interior of this classic home.

The renovation and extension project at Orchard Lane not only preserves the historical charm of the original structure but also enhances the living experience for the owners. Similarly, the project aims to create a harmonious blend of timeless aesthetics and modern functionality by incorporating sustainable heating solutions and thoughtfully optimizing the interior design. Ultimately, the result will be a home that honors the past while embracing the future.

Design Portfolio: “Lakeview”

Lakeview is located in a small community, just an hour from Seattle, Washington, directly on Big Lake in Mount Vernon. A recent transplant from California, the owner brought their love for indoor-outdoor living into their vision for the project. Their home-to-be would need to feature innovative functions and flexible interior-exterior modularity. During the summer months, this would mean an increase in living space, as long as the weather cooperated.

This residence is intended to be their forever home, where they can age gracefully and pass it on to their children. In doing so, Lakeview accommodates additional accessories that make the home more practical for aging bodies. However, it needed to be done in a way that doesn’t detract from the home’s aesthetic. To ensure the client can enjoy their dream home for as long as possible, the design features space for a small elevator, stair lifts, and a home workout room. In doing so, the stars were widened, and ramps were added where possible.

Indoor-Outdoor Living: Adapting to Summer Months

Lakeview has a deck that faces Big Lake with almost 180-degrees of view; it was essential for the client to make the most of the beautiful location whenever possible. With that in mind, the owner requested that the home feature sliders that open the back of the house to the deck. The home itself sits on a downward slope, offering privacy from the quiet street. Though large at 4,317 square feet, Lakeview sits in a way that doesn’t obstruct the views of its neighbors and sits comfortably on the hillside. All of this lends itself to providing the owner the best possible chance to enjoy the indoor-outdoor aesthetic and summer weather of their location.

To tie toe design in further, Lakeview’s cladding takes inspiration from its surroundings, using local colors and raw wood materials wherever possible. The design was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie style homes (a style invented by the architect in 1900), and the result is both classic and contemporary. Inspiration from his work meant the home must meld aspects of the arts and crafts movement that came before: the environment that surrounds it, and simplicity that will carry the house well into the 21st century and beyond. Just like the homes that inspired it.

We would like to think that Lakeview’s design will serve the test of time and carry itself well into tomorrow so the client’s descendants may enjoy it or whoever may call Lakeview home.

Design Portfolio: “Woodcreek”

Woodcreek is a house design for a Client located in Lynden, Washington. The small Dutch town, nestled alongside the Canadian border, is home to just under 15,000 residents. It is the second largest city in Whatcom County.

Woodcreek is inspired by the Dutch Colonial-style houses that are found throughout the area. It offers its residents modern amenities and creature comforts in a style harking back to yesteryear.

The home features ample covered porches facing both the front and back yard, giving the owners plenty of room for outdoor activities. The back porch is designed with space to house two grills year-round for barbecuing whenever inspiration strikes. The backyard features a large in-ground pool and pool-house/hobby workshop, offering extra storage and a small space for the owner to build small woodworking projects.

Original Vision: Modern Needs Meets Traditional Style

The home features five bedrooms and four bathrooms within 5,750 square feet. The home is anything but the small farmhouse that it intends to replace. Space comes in abundance within the home’s many walls, focusing on family life in every room. The home features multiple entertainment possibilities for the owner’s family, children, and grandchildren.

The colonial style of this home, while large, fits its surroundings in the town founded in the 1870s. Much of the town’s architecture is in a similar style, more so in the downtown area. The predominately Dutch Colonial town features many historic places and wonderful examples of design history, and Woodcreek fits right in.

One of the standout features of Poolside Paradise is the inner courtyard. The tranquil oasis offers a peaceful retreat from daily life, with lush greenery and cobblestone creating a serene atmosphere.

Additionally, the bedrooms are located opposite the house from the living area, providing a sense of privacy and seclusion. Each bedroom is designed to be spacious and comfortable, with large windows that allow natural light and fresh air to flow. The master bedroom features an en-suite bathroom and a walk-in closet.

The pool is surrounded by a deck and lounge chairs, providing a comfortable and stylish space to soak up the sun. The backyard is landscaped with lush greenery, adding to the natural and serene feel of the house.

In summary, Poolside Paradise is a stunning example of mid-century modern architecture that blends style and functionality. With its inner courtyard and enclosed backyard pool, this house is the perfect place to call home for those who appreciate the beauty of mid-century modern design.

Design Portfolio: “Garage Conversion”

This garage conversion project in the Pacific Northwest involved an interior overhaul of the kitchen and attached garage to increase the home’s overall value and maximize potential profits. The design used affordable off-the-shelf components and sustainable building materials to cut costs and increase energy efficiency. While this is a simple project in scope, with remodels on the rise in the area, its importance to the team is paramount.

Where the Conversion Happened

The attached garage of the single-story 1965 home was fully insulated and raised to accommodate its new room function. Additionally, the home’s chimney was completely removed. The structure’s existing windows were re-caulked to reduce resource consumption and cut the strain on the home’s new central air system. Not only that, a tankless water heater replaced the home’s aging unit.

Elsewhere, the kitchen features modern drum shades, quartz countertops, and dark-wood cabinetry. Stainless steel appliances were added to provide a durable finish suitable for home cooks. Not to be outdone, even the original 1960s hardwood flooring was re-finished to maintain the home’s original charm while bringing it to modern standards.

A full bath and tiled shower with a walk-in closet were added to the new Primary suite, providing a modern touch to the home. Lastly, the interior design brought the mid-century home to contemporary living, providing a modern feel with sustainable building materials.

Client Vision

The client’s vision was well-informed from the very beginning. The owner themselves is a first-time home owner who works in Tech and enjoys hosing game nights with friends and collogues. As a result of their research and in-depth notes, solutions for the Garage Conversion were easy to come by. Therefore, every design decision was based on the end goals of the project: appealing to the aesthetic of the current owner and adding to the resale value of the lot.
