Design Portfolio: “Work-Life Integration”
“A unique residential warehouse designed for a couple who owns a shipping distribution company.” The project embodies the concept of work-life integration, seamlessly blurring the boundaries between work and personal life. Drawing inspiration from traditional barn structures, it creates a modern interpretation that blends harmoniously with the rural setting of North West Washington.
Location
Situated in rural North West Washington, a few hours north of Seattle, the residential warehouse benefits from its surroundings. The region offers abundant outdoor activities and hiking opportunities between the Cascade Mountain range and Puget Sound. This location allows homeowners to engage in family activities and escape the monotony of working from home.
Main Floor
Dedicated to the operational aspects of the shipping distribution company, the main floor features a spacious shipping warehouse and dual office suites. Conveniently, a water closet serves the needs of occupants and visitors. With a design that facilitates efficient workflow and productivity, the main floor maintains a connection with the residential area.
Residential Suite
Above the shipping warehouse, a full live-in suite provides a private residential space for the couple. Cleverly separated from the lower floor’s industrial uses, it offers a tranquil and comfortable living environment. The residential suite comprises two bedrooms and a large bath. Its open-concept design fosters a flowing shared living space with a full kitchen, areas for living and dining, and flexible spaces tailored to the client’s specific interests and hobbies.
Exterior Design
The exterior design of the residential warehouse showcases a distinctive blend of modern aesthetics and traditional barn-inspired architecture. A prominent large carport serves as a storage area for shipping containers. The main body of the warehouse incorporates three garage doors, with two set at different heights. Smaller garage doors cater to typical vehicles and tools, while a larger central door accommodates massive equipment, deliveries, and trucks. Additionally, an exterior storage closet resembling a shed provides convenience for maintaining the property and surrounding lot.
Design Inspiration
The design concept of Work-Life Integration draws inspiration from traditional barn structures found in agricultural buildings of yesteryear. It skillfully translates the barn design into a modern interpretation that seamlessly situates the residential warehouse within its pastoral surroundings. This approach establishes a visual connection with the rural environment while harmonizing the old and the new.
